Swindler & Swindler
Black and white portrait of a bearded man centred within an ornate Victorian frame featuring a pointed arch, scrollwork, and botanical motifs; small red seal at base.

Significant figures — frame as archive.

Part of an ongoing series begun in 2019, this illustration surrounds a portrait with the scientific life of a chemist whose contributions were overlooked or appropriated. The ornamental frame is not decoration — it is a document. Chemical formulas are embedded within the fine-line engraving; molecules rest among acanthus leaves and rosettes. The Mughal pointed arch introduces an architectural register tied to this particular subject. Published monthly in Chemistry World (circulation over 50,000), the series has developed a sustained editorial relationship between Margot Reverdy and the RSC's member magazine, allowing each frame to function as both ornament and precise scientific notation.
