YA horror cover: skull in forest
Cover commission for Unnamed Bones. The composition centers a non-human skull with elongated jaw and clawed hands emerging from eye sockets, entirely surrounded by dense forest — ferns, branches, and flowering plants rendered in fine line and layered blue-green tone. The title text integrates directly into the illustration field. This was the studio's first horror cover; the central challenge was holding two registers in tension simultaneously: a devouring forest atmosphere and genuine botanical delicacy, without one consuming the other. The solution was entanglement rather than separation — danger camouflaged within something attractive.
